The majority of Final Fantasy fans will argue that Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt the best Final Fantasy game ever made. So just what was it that made Final Fantasy VII such a huge success?
Final Fantasy VII’s a fairly lengthy RPG, and at the most it’ll take you about 50 hours to complete, give or take a couple of hours – so it’s not the longest RPG ever made, but within this 50 hours of game play fans will uncover one of the richest story’s ever written, with deep back story’s that will give the player an insight into the characters like never seen before in an RPG.
Up until Final Fantasy VII, the PlayStation hadn’t really seen many 3D titles and it was Final Fantasy VII that set a new standard for video game graphics across the industry. Final Fantasy VII had ground-breaking visuals for it’s time, that were light years beyond anything ever seen on PlayStation – and is if this wasn’t enough, Square Soft took it one step further by adding FMV sequences that looked truly outstanding back in 1997. Final Fantasy VII also brings in a lot of generic elements from the JRPG genre, such as the turn-based battle system, character levelling, equipment and a world map. However, what made Final Fantasy VII so special was that it redefined the meaning of these elements.
One of the most notable of these redefined elements was the equipment system, rather than simply equipping a weapon and accessory of your choice, you could bind Materia to your weapons and accessories. This added a whole new twist to the game, because it allowed characters to use skills that they wouldn’t be able to use without the use of Materia. For example, by binding Materia to weapons you could give characters the ability to use spells and summons that in previous Final Fantasy’s could only be used by Black Mages and Summoners. This added customization added a lot of depth to the game, as it added a strategic twist to the game that really did change the outcome and thought process of battles.
